About this property

Welcome to SGE Argyll Hotel

Located on Argyll Street in Dunoon, this traditional hotel occupies a 19th-century building with views over the River Clyde. Guests have access to free Wi-Fi throughout the property and can enjoy dining at the on-site Rio Ristorante, which serves Italian cuisine and receives positive feedback for its quality. The hotel does not offer free parking or air conditioning, but it is accessible and welcomes families, providing breakfast, room service, a bar, and a smoke-free environment.

Accommodation features classic décor with some rooms boasting river views, large beds, and spacious bathrooms. The atmosphere reflects a Victorian style, with some areas showing signs of wear yet maintaining a comfortable and tidy environment. Reviewers appreciate the cleanliness and the helpfulness of staff, although some note that the lift can be unreliable and the hotel lacks modern amenities like a pool or fitness center.

Set about a 7-minute walk from the Castle House Museum and within reasonable distance to attractions such as Benmore Botanic Garden and Puck's Glen, the hotel suits visitors interested in exploring the local area. It is also conveniently positioned near the town centre and ferry terminal, making it practical for those arriving via Glasgow or Edinburgh airports. While the bar's drink selection has occasionally been described as limited, the hotel's dining and event experiences, including themed weekends, receive praise for good value and entertaining service.

The SGE Argyll Hotel generally appeals to guests seeking a characterful base with traditional charm in Dunoon rather than a modern, upscale resort. Families and visitors attending local events or looking for straightforward accommodation with dining options will find the hotel meets these needs reasonably well, as reflected in its mixed but mostly positive reviews.

Our party attended the murder mystery weekend and found the hotel to be perfect for such an event. There is free parking across the road from the hotel ( drive past the yellow lines painted on the ground. It's free from here to the pedestrian ferry port). The hotel is your classic Victorian styled hotel, very nice decor, a bit tired in places but not that noticeable, kind of adds a bit of charm, the reception, bar and lobbies were clean and tidy. We were on floor 2 in room 114, which was large, plenty of room around the bed with a side board, bedside tables, and a tall wardrobe for clothes. The toilet was huge again, plenty of room. There was a shower and a bath. You had to step into the bath to take a shower. The room was clean and tidy. Our linen and towels weren't changed daily, but as we were only there for 2 nights, this didn't bother us. There was a stain in the roof, from an upstairs leak and there was no toilet roll but after a visit to the reception we were given one straight away. The bed was huge and comfy. The view out the window was stunning. The room was very hot, but the radiator was easily turned down, and the sash windows were able to be opened a little. The dining room where we had breakfast was large and well spaced out. The food was hot and tasty. Our murder mystery was fantastic. The actors were very professional and funny and ran it to a degree that it was interesting from start to finish. The innuendo was hilarious. The meal during the night was exceptional, very nice. The bar could of been stocked with a better selection of drinks. However, the barman did go down to the bar below the hotel and get more. All the staff at the hotel were brilliant. Nothing was too much bother. They were polite, prompt, and well presented. This was a very nice place we would book again.

We stayed here overnight recently while at a concert. On arrival the man on reception was so helpful and Informative. Our room was lovely with triple aspect windows and amazing views. All staff we met were friendly. Although the building is old the cleanliness was spotless. This was our second stay and we will return. Good value for money too.

Had my grans 80th birthday lunch here two weeks ago, food was amazing and so was the service, all the staff were approachable & helpful, specific mention to joanna as she couldnt have done more to help but all staff that we spoke to couldnt have been nicer, bar staff/waitresses especially! no complaints at all !!! I stayed over for the night and although the rooms/hotel is 'dated' in my opinion that was part of the experience, its an old traditional scottish hotel. The breakfast, again, amazing tattie scones especially

Booked at short notice on a whim. Very pleasant staff from reception to bar to the young lady serving our lunch. Comfortable furnishings and even though I felt it was a little dated in the corridoors and public areas it was fresh and clean. The old lift is unusual yet interesting and I wouldnt try to squeeze 4 adults ith luggage in. The sea view room we chose was quite spacious, with nice heavy drapes, large bed and had probably been painted in the last couple of years. There were plenty tea/coffee facilities and a t.v. The bathroom also had a decent sizes shower with good pressure and easily controllable water temperature. Our choice for lunch was a homemade soup and sandwich combo that came with a handful of salad amd nacho chips. This was ideal and the sandwiches were well filled. I really recommend the Guinness to wash it down too.

Great place for drinks and in the centre of town five minutes walk from the Caledonian MacBrayne passenger ferry terminal. Bar lounge area is comfortable with views across the water and has a narrow balcony in front for al fresco dining or drinks with limited seating. There is a beer garden downstairs on ground level next to the Argyll gardens which also has access to a smaller bar/ snug area when the weather is less kind and is more accessible for those with mobility issues. This area also benefits from great views and watching the world go by.

Beautiful Hotel, fantastic location, great food.. Breakfast is amazing, friendly, helpful staff. The Murder mystery weekend is such good value for money, and a great laugh. I'd give it 5 stars, but as usual.. I have only one complaint. The bloody lift is always out of order!! Please please please get it fixed, especially in this heat!!!
